Statement by National Association of Water Companies Executive Director Michael Deane on the Flint Water Crisis

02/05/2016

The National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) is closely monitoring the developments in Flint, Michigan, and our member companies stand ready to offer expertise and solutions to local, state, and federal officials.

Our primary concern continues to be for the health and safety of all Flint residents affected by this crisis. We extend our heartfelt desire to support efforts to restore quality water service to each and every person.

Those who rely on access to safe water are always the top priority of both public and private water utilities. The challenges facing officials in Flint are formidable, and it will take experts and professionals from both the public and private water sectors coming together to safely restore water service to the people of this community as soon as possible.

Having dependable access to quality water service every day, all day, year after year is something many of us take for granted until cities like Flint bring attention to the complexities of water delivery and treatment. This situation is a reminder that our nation’s aging water infrastructure system has been neglected and is increasingly failing. By working together, we can solve the country’s water infrastructure challenges through proactive planning and prioritizing each community’s needs before problems occur. Increasingly, innovative financing and project delivery are being used to deliver these solutions.

Water is essential to everyone’s life, and delivering reliable, safe water is a matter of public trust for the water industry, including private water companies that serve more than 73 million people across the nation.
