The National Association of Water Companies Announces Inaugural Recipient of NAWC Living Water Award

The National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) is pleased to announce that California Water Service Company’s (Cal Water) Jan Mirts has been named as the first recipient of an NAWC Living Water Award.

The NAWC Living Water Awards were established to recognize the private water industry professionals who are “living water” through their extraordinary commitment to quality, service and community. The program was announced in October during the 2012 NAWC Water Summit in Miami, Florida.

In her position as a flushing truck foreman with Cal Water, Mirts helps to maintain the essential infrastructure that brings water to homes and businesses. But beyond the daily requirements of her job, she is known by her coworkers as an engaged and caring volunteer. As part of Cal Water’s efforts to support the communities it serves, Mirts organized a group of fellow water professionals to install a conservation-friendly landscape and drip irrigation system at a local women’s shelter. She also participates in the annual Bridging the Gap by Giving Walk4Water event, which raised almost $40,000 in 2012 to help promote access to safe and clean water in Tanzania, Zambia, Nepal and beyond.

“I congratulate Jan Mirts and Cal Water for this achievement. Each of the NAWC Living Water Awards finalists deserves to be applauded for their dedication to making a difference and for serving as an inspiration to everyone in the private water industry. I am enthusiastic about the future of this award and look forward to continuing to recognize these outstanding individuals and the impact they have in their communities,” said Michael Deane, executive director, NAWC.

The NAWC Living Water Awards program is an ongoing initiative and any employee of an NAWC member company can participate by nominating a colleague online at anytime. The voting process will take place every two months on the NAWC Facebook page and we encourage you to “like” us to receive regular program updates.
