When the forecast calls for dangerous weather, it is important to be prepared for any impact to your drinking water supply. Here are some very important precautions you should take.

Be sure to stock up on water before the storm hits. You should store at least one gallon of water, per day, for each person in your family – and you need to have enough to cover at least three days. And don’t forget about pets;they need ½ a gallon per day.

Make sure your water bottles and containers are clean before filling. 

Water Treatment
If you run out of water that you’ve stored, be sure any water you use is from a reliable source. Any suspicious water should be treated through boiling, chlorination or distillation.

The EPA provides full details on emergency disinfection of drinking water. 

· Boiling. Boiling is the easiest method. Bring water to a full rolling boil for one minute and ensure the water  cools before drinking.

 · Chlorination. Use an unscented household bleach that contains 5.25 to 6.0 percent sodium hypochlorite. Use 1/8 teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water to be treated. Let the solution stand for 30 minutes, at which time it should still have a slight bleach odor. If it does not, do not use. 

· Distillation. Distillation will remove germs that resist boiling and chlorination. Fill a pot halfway with water, tie a cup to the handle of the lid, and put the lid on upside down so the cup is hanging into the water (but not into the boiling water). Boil the water for 20 minutes. The water that collects in the cup is safe to drink.
