PHILADELPHIA (June 28, 2021) – The National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) today announced that world-renowned medical expert and leader, Dr. Deborah Birx, will deliver the keynote presentation at the 2021 NAWC Water Summit taking place in Chicago from October 3-5.
Dr. Birx’s long career has focused on clinical and basic immunology, infectious disease, pandemic preparedness, vaccine research, and global health. Her career began with serving in the United States Army, and later turned into running some of the most high-profile and influential programs at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Department of State.
Most recently, Dr. Birx served as the White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator where she used complex data integration to drive decision making, providing recommendations to, and working closely with, state officials across the country to provide state-specific advice and guidance.
“As we look ahead with a renewed understanding of the importance of the regulated water industry’s role in safeguarding and promoting public health, there’s never been a better time to hear lessons learned from an esteemed medical expert who helped lead the nation from the frontlines of the pandemic,” said NAWC President and CEO Robert F. Powelson. “This year’s Summit theme is ‘Resilience in Recovery’ and if anyone can provide insight on the path to recovery, it’s Dr. Birx. We’re honored to have her join us in Chicago as we convene industry executives, policy experts, consumer advocates, and regulators to discuss current and emerging issues facing the water industry.”
The NAWC Water Summit is the only conference focused exclusively on the opportunities and challenges facing water companies that provide service to over 73 million Americans. Throughout the two days of programming, an expert line up of panelists and presenters will highlight how NAWC member companies are embracing the lessons learned from the last 15 months and moving forward to continue the good work still to be done.
The agenda will highlight current issues that are at the forefront for water company executives, regulators and other key stakeholders, with sessions dedicated to topics such as:
- Realizing the Promise of Water Equity
- Ensuring Resilient Water System Infrastructure
- Developing the Workforce of the Future
- Cybersecurity: Securing Our Defenses Against Increasing Threats
- Utility of the Future: Innovation & Technology
