NAWC welcomes EPA focus on PFAs, urges establishment of enforceable maximum containment

(PHILADELPHIA) – Following the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issuing new health advisories regarding PFAS – also known as “forever chemicals” in drinking water, National Association of Water Companies President & CEO Robert F. Powelson issued the following statement:

“While we appreciate the EPA’s continued focus on PFAS-related issues, NAWC urges the EPA to prioritize finishing its work establishing enforceable Maximum Contaminant Levels in order to provide clarity to utilities, their customers and the states.

“NAWC also urges Congress and the EPA to do everything within their power to ensure that those who manufactured and used PFAS chemicals are responsible for funding cleanup and treatment costs rather than water and wastewater utilities, which are on the frontlines of removing these dangerous compounds.

“In the absence of clear federal regulation, NAWC member companies have proactively been working to both remove these ‘forever chemicals’ as part of our promise to ensure safe drinking water for the communities we serve and utilize the courts to hold polluters directly responsible.
