NAWC hopes the EPA's cybersecurity requirements represent first step to secure nation's water, wastewater

PHILADELPHIA – With the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today mandating cybersecurity assessments as part of state “sanitary survey” programs, National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) President & CEO Robert F. Powelson issued the following statement:

“Prior to the EPA mandating these cybersecurity plans, more than 90% of America’s regulated water utilities have had cybersecurity plans in place – and these companies are, unfortunately, the exception not the rule.

“We know and understand the importance of securing the only utility that we ingest from cyber threats, especially as cybersecurity risks and threats continue to grow and become more sophisticated.

“While this measure may not be ideal, it is what we hope is a first step by the EPA and others to shape cybersecurity policies aimed at driving uniform compliance and enforcement in the water sector. Our nation’s cybersecurity strategies for water and wastewater must continue to evolve to include a comprehensive oversight model that will protect all consumers.”
